The other day it was announced that New Line Cinema have taken over the "Police Academy" franchise and hope to have a new sequel out by next August. It was rumored few years back that a reboot/remake was happening, but then it got cancelled. The it was announced that a proper reboot with new recruits in it would be happening.
Now it seems that the studio plan to make a direct sequel, "Police Academy 8" and will have some of the original characters, plus a whole new bunch of characters included in it. Steve Guttenberg, Michael Winslow and Leslie Easterbrook are all set to return to their original roles. Some of Tackleberry's kid is to be one of the new generation of recruits, including some offspring from other original characters.
Bubba Smith was set to make a appearence, but he sadly passed away earlier today at the age of 66. No one yet knows how he died.
This new sequel will most likely kick start a whole new franchise for the 80's and 90's slapstick cop comedy franchise. I can seriously see a "Police Academy 9, 10 and 11" and futher installments also being planned very soon.
